NSW Yamaha rider Stephen Gall showed that he was going to be a threat in the upcoming Mister Motocross (Mr MX) series when he convincingly won both legs of the Unlimited Feature races in the Eldorado Motocross Spectacular at Amaroo Park on 1 May 1977.

The field included Suzuki riders – the Late Anthony Gunter and Kiwi Ivan Miller – Gunter the reigning Mr MX champion and Miller the current series leader, who was aboard a brand new RM370. WA rider Graeme Smythe was riding a Maico, having just switched from Kawasaki, as was Kiwi – Australian 125cc Champion Brian Martin. Hans Appelgren and Peter Kalen were both on board Husqvarna machines.

In Moto 1, Gall established an unassailable lead in just two laps, when Mike Landman dropped his machine on the treacherous saucer opposite the start and was run over by Brian Martin, who also crashed while trying to avoid him.  Gunter was in close contention too for several laps, but his 370 Yamaha was no match for Gall on his new Brian Collins Yamaha 400.  

Miller and Gunter were hard at each other for 10 laps. With two laps remaining, Miller dived under Gunter, who dropped his machine and was unable to finish. Gall won the moto ahead of Miller, with Hans Appelgren in third ahead of Martin and Smythe.

Gall leapt to the lead at the start of Moto 2, with Miller and Gunter again going head-to-head for 10 laps. In this moto, Laurie Alderton was up with the leading pack, until he dropped his 400cc Maico.  With two wins, Gall won overall with Gunter finishing second ahead of Miller in third with Martin and Appelgren completing the Top 5.

250cc Eldorado Chain Lube series
In the 250 Eldorado Chain Lube series, Anthony Gunter won both legs to be the overall winner, ahead of Hans Appelgren with two second placings on his 250 Maico.  Brendon Kelly was third in Moto 1, with Honda rider Mark Pace finishing third in Moto 2.
