On 17 November 2012, Australian motocross legend Craig Anderson retired from professional racing in the same town that it all started for him.  He had his last professional ride at the final round of the Terex Australian Supercross Championships at the Newcastle Showgrounds in Sydney, New South Wales.

Throughout his 26 year racing career, Anderson won 13 Australian motocross, supercross and junior titles and a successful international career in Europe and the United States.

After top performances in the German International Supercross Championship (2nd 1999, 4th 2000 and 3rd 2002) “Ando” earned an invitation to race in the United States.

In 2003 he rode for Yamaha of Troy in the 250cc class, winning the Southwick round of the series and finishing seventh overall in his first year.  The following year he moved to the highly competitive Open class where he went head-to-head against his cousin, multiple AMA and FIM World Champion Chad Reed, finishing the season in 15th before returning home to Australia.

The Newcastle race was a fitting finish for Anderson.  It was the place where he had his first race at the age of 14 and it enabled the home crowd to send him off in style and see him battle for the last time against cousin Reed, who also grew up in Newcastle before his family moved to a farm in Kurri Kurri.

Reed won the Open Class at the Newcastle Supercross ahead of Jay Marmont (Monster Energy Kawasaki) and Daniel McCoy (Craig Dack Racing Yamaha), with Anderson finishing in fifteenth in the 20-lap final aboard a Yamaha.

Marmont won the 2012 series ahead of McCoy, with Reed in third after winning rounds 2 to 4, having missing the opening round in Dubbo (NSW).
