Australia hosts it own International motocross series in the 1970s
After Gibbes ran his last series in 1969/70, Australia continued to run its own international tours into the early seventies, with the Auto Cycle Council of Australia (ACCA) collaborating with the local state bodies and adopting the same format.
The first round of the 1971 International Motocross Series was held on 29 August at the Herne Hill circuit on the outskirts of Perth (WA) and attracted huge publicity, being filmed live on television by Channel 7.
That year the international riders included Jim Aird (Scotland), Randy and Rowley Owen (England), Australian and New Zealand Champion Ivan Miller (NZ) and Australian Champion Gary Flood (Victoria), and Laurie Alderton (NSW).
Jim Aird won the event on a 400cc Husqvarna (8 points) ahead of Ivan Miller (Husqvarna, 6) and Randy Owen (CZ, 4). Victoria’s Gary Flood was the first Australian rider home (Bultaco, 3) ahead of WA rider Graeme Smythe (CZ, 2).
The other local riders to finish in the points at Herne Hill were Philip Bruce, Richie Kings, Alan Reid, Doug Underwood and Laurie Johnson.
WA held two rounds that year, with Round 2 being held on 5 September at Manjimup, in the South West before heading over east to Mount Lofty (SA) on 12 September, Christmas Hills (VIC) and Mount Kembla (NSW) on 10 October.
The results were almost identical at Manjimup with Aird again winning over Kiwi Miller with these riders battling it out through to the final round at Tivolli in Queensland. Miller took out the series on a countback, after tying with Aird on 44 points.
A documentary was made of this series, mostly featuring the Herne Hill round, which has now been converted to digital by the AMX History website for you to view – see video below.
These ACCA international events continued through the 1970s, but in 1972 the event was overshadowed by another international motocross series in Australia.
