Young gun Duffy wins opening MX1 round

Western Australian KTM rider Regan Duffy narrowly leads the MX1 2021 Penrite ProMX Championship Series after winning the opening round on 11 April at Wonthaggi – the seaside town located south east of Melbourne in Gippsland, Victoria.

The 18-year-old finished on 24 points in the premiere Thor MX1 class – for two-stroke engines up to 250cc and four-stroke engines up to 450cc.  In his first ride in senior ranks, Duffy finished just four points ahead of Brett Metcalfe (Honda) and five points ahead of Todd Waters (Husqvarna).

Thousands of race fans braved the challenging cold and wet weather conditions and flocked to the opening round of the 2021 season, which unveiled am exciting new race format with live TV coverage, race-day promotions and entertainment.  The Dandendong Motor Cycle Club did a great job hosting the event with the track holding up well under the conditions.

Duffy, the reigning MX3 champion for riders under 19-years, showed the top MX1 competitors that he will be a force in 2021, although the sandy circuit favoured the West Aussie.

After setting the fastest time in qualifying, less than 1/10th of a second ahead of Honda’s Kirk Gibbs, Duffy won the second moto ahead of Waters and Kirk Gibbs (Honda) and finished fourth in the opening moto to finish on top of the podium.

Veteran campaigner Brett Metcalfe, who finished second overall, put himself in a great position to win the opening round after winning Moto 1 ahead of Duffy and Luke Clout (Yamaha).

But after a mid-race challenge in the second moto, he slipped to fifth position behind Duffy, Waters, Gibbs and Hayden Melross (Yamaha), who was riding under duress after suffering a heavy full earlier in the day.

Reigning MX1 champion Todd Waters secured the final place on the podium with a consistent performance – finishing second in Moto 2 and fourth in Moto 1.

It was a tough return to racing for two-time MX1 Australian Champion Matt Moss who crashed heavily early in the opening moto – ending his day.

Luke Clout looked the goods in Moto 1 finishing second behind Metcalfe, but he withdrew from the second moto with a mechanical issue.

Webster's perfect start to the MX2 season

Honda rider Kyle Webster leads the Pirelli MX2 2021 Penrite AMXPro Championship Series by ten points after round 1 at Wonthaggi.  After setting the fastest qualifying time on the day ahead of WBR Yamaha’s Alex Larwood and Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson, Webster convincingly made it a clean sweep – winning both motos.

Larwood, who finished second overall on 40 points, led the opening moto early after passing Husqvarna rider Dylan Wills, who won the holeshot.  But Webster soon took the race lead and held on to win with Larwood on his back wheel for the entire moto.  Yamaha riders took out all the minor placings with Nathan Crawford and Jesse Hogan tying for third place on 38 points.  Crawford finished third in Moto 1 ahead of Hogan, with these results being reversed in the second Moto.

Kingsford wins opening MX3 round on a countback

Ryder Kingsford (Yamaha) and Blake Fox (GasGas) are the equal Championship leaders in the MAXXIS MX3 class for riders under 19 years of age after the opening round for 2021.  Both riders finished 1-2 on the day in both motos on 47 points.  But Kingsford, from New South Wales, was deemed the round 1 winner on countback after winning the second moto. Kingsford deserved the win setting the pace in qualifying ahead Ben Novak (Honda) and Fox.  But Fox won the opening moto by 15-seconds ahead of Kingsford, with Kobe Drew (Yamaha) third.

The second moto, however, was a hard-fought battle between Kingsford and Fox, with Kingsford winning by the narrowest of margins (1.8-seconds), giving him the overall win.  Yamaha rider Kobe Drew finished third overall on 38 points, behind Kingsford and Fox – placing third and fourth respectively in the first and second motos of the season.
