Brett Metcalfe - Australian International supercross and motocross pioneer

Teenage motocross sensation Brett Metcalfe from Mannum in South Australia had immediate success in seniors, winning both the 2000 Australian 125cc Supercross Championship and prestigious Australian Supercross Masters series in the same class at just 17 years.

Following these outstanding achievements, he headed over to Europe to contest the International Paris (Bercy) Supercross in France. Along with fellow-Australians Chad Reed and Michael Byrne, the trio impressed, with all three riders launching their international racing careers at this event.

“Metty”, as he was nicknamed, won a race in the Prince of Bercy 125cc class to finish on the podium, overall in third place. He returned home briefly, then permanently ventured overseas to Europe to pursue an international racing career.

After competing in the 2002 World 125cc Championship, where he finished 18th overall, Metcalfe then headed to the United States of America, turning pro in 2003, racing for many of the sport’s elite American factory race teams for over a decade.

During his stellar racing career, in Supercross alone he finished on the podium nine times in AMA SX events between 2003 and 2010, finishing third in the 2010 AMA SX East Lites series, joining Kim Ashkenazi and Chad Reed at the time, to become the third Australian to achieve this feat.

The year 2010 was Metcalfe’s most successful, finishing on the podium three times on his Honda CRF250 – in third place at Atlanta , Saint Louis, and Jacksonville between February and March 2010. He also finished second in the AMA National Motocross Championship.

Metcalfe represented his country five times in the Motocross des Nations between 2008 and 2013, the year he also won the Canadian Motocross Championship. On all of these occasions, Team Australia finished in the Top 10.

Metcalfe returns home from the USA

Photo:  Metcalfe returned to Australia in 2018, riding for Honda through to 2021.

In 2016, the Canadian Motocross Champion signed with Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha to contest this championship series, before signing a deal with Honda to race in Australia for 2018.

He was the Runner-up Australian MX1 and SX1 champion in 2018, finishing fourth in the 2019 National Supercross series. With the cancellation of the 2019 and 2020 National Penrite ProMX Motocross Championships due to the Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions between States, Metcalfe returned to his home in Mannum with his wife and children and completely dominated the South Australian Motocross Championships.

He is still competing in the Penrite Pro MX Australian Motocross Championships aboard a KTM and is currently placed in the Top 10 in the premier MX1 class.
