Ferris wins 2013 Belgium Grand Prix

On 18 August 2013, Australian motocross champion Dean Ferris broke through for his first-ever overall win in a World Motocross Grand Prix at Bastogne in Belgium.

Ferris, who grew up on a farm in Kyogle, New South Wales, rode his Monster Energy Yamaha YZ250F to pole position and won both motos to become the fourth ever Australian to stand atop a GP podium, joining Jeff Leisk, Chad Reed and the late Andrew McFarlane.  After dominating the qualifying, the 23-year-old won both GP races to score maximum points and win the overall Round 16 World MX2 Championship in Belgium.

In Moto 1, Ferris’ teammate Maxime Desprey (France) led at the start with Ferris in second, eating his dirt. Because of the rocks and dust, Ferris purposely kept his distance then passed Desprey when he tired, eventually dropping to fourth place at the chequered flag.  Ferris maintained a two second gap in the lead holding on to win the race ahead of two other Frenchmen Jordi Tixier (KTM) and Christophe Charlier (Yamaha) in second and third, respectively.

In Moto 2, Ferris started in second again. But on this occasion, he immediately passed for the lead and dominated – pulling away to a seven-second lead after 15 minutes.  Once he had established that break on the field, Ferris maintained a steady pace to win the moto ahead of KTM riders Dutchman Glen Coldenhoff and Spaniard Antonio Butron Oliva.   Scoring maximum points on the day, Ferris was the overall Belgium MX2 Grand Prix winner ahead of Tixier (2-5) and Coldenhoff (8-2).

Ferris had a great year in Europe in 2013, finishing a creditable sixth in the World MX2 Championship, which that year was convincingly won by Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings (KTM).  Herlings missed out on points in Round 16 at Belgium after dislocating his shoulder in practice. However, he had already clinched the 2013 World MX2 Championship at the previous round in Czechoslovakia, winning overall in all previous motos.
