Australia crowned 2009 World Junior Motocross Champions

Australia wins Junior Nations trophy and Jay Wilson crowned our first official FIM World MX Champion
On 15-16 August 2009, Australia captured the Nations Trophy at the FIM Junior Motocross World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand.
Australian Jay Wilson won the 85cc class for 12-14 year-olds at the Digger McEwen Motocross Park and became the country’s first ever official FIM Motocross World Champion, while 125cc rider Tye Simmonds finished second in his class to ensure the title for Australia.
However, exactly 30 years earlier, Australian motocross legend Jeff Leisk was the World Champion for his age group in the 125cc class at the World Mini Grand Prix held at Saddleback circuit, USA in August 1979.
The Nations Trophy is awarded after taking into account the best result for one individual rider in each of the two classes, and Australia took out the overall title ahead of Italy and New Zealand.
GMR Motorex KTM racers Jay Wilson and Dylan Long flew the Australian flag in the 85cc class with Wilson collecting 1-3 race results. His GMR Motorex KTM teammate Dylan Long scored 2-7 results to place third overall, behind Italian rider Samuele Bernardini (4-1).
Race one was an Australian trifecta with Wilson blitzing the field, with Long over eight seconds behind him, with Hayden Mellross a further eight seconds adrift in third. Queenslander Joel Dinsdale was a late replacement for in the Australian team for the injured Jackson Richardson.
American Eli Tomac was crowned the 125cc Junior Motocross World Champion by finishing second in the race after he had earlier captured the Race One victory.
Simmonds won Race Two and was third behind local New Zealand rider Hamish Dobbyn, who finished third with 2-4 finishes.
Other members of the winning Australian team in the 125cc class were Luke Styke who rode strongly to finish fourth overall, Harley Quinlan (7th), Josh Cachia (8th), Ross Beaton (9th), Jason Reed (11th), Dylan Peterson (14th) and Matt Phillips (22nd).
2009 was the first time Motorcycling Australia sent a team to the FIM Junior Motocross World Championships with Australia winning the Nations Trophy in its first attempt. Italy finished second ahead of New Zealand and The Netherlands in third and fourth, respectively.
