On 18 June 1978, the Victorian Hang Ten round was held for the upcoming Australian Championships at Wallan.

The meeting attracted the State’s top riders and despite the dreadful weather conditions leading up to the race, the track held up and there was a good crowd in icy conditions – with snow on the hills just 10 miles away.

Yamaha rider Bernie Ryan won the premiere Unlimited (over 300cc) class, being undefeated on the day on 30 points (1-1). Fellow Yamaha riders Ron Dinsdale and Chris Wright were second and third overall, respectively. Dinsdale finished second to Ryan in leg two and third in the first behind Trevor Flood, who led that race but dropped his Yamaha on the very last lap, but recovered to finish second.

Dinsdale also placed second in the 125cc class. Riding a Montesa, he won the first leg. But after finishing fourth in leg 2 to score 25 points, Yamaha rider Mike Landman was the overall winner with 2-1 finishes and a score of 27 points. Mark Hill (Melbourne Motorcycles Suzuki) was third overall with two 3-3 finishes (20 points).

The 250cc class produced some great racing in leg 1 between Honda rider Lucas Reynolds, Mark Hill (Suzuki) and Jack Pengally. On lap 2, 16-year-old Hill shot to the lead, but was eventually passed by both riders. Kawasaki rider Trevor Williams, who was in fourth, managed to pass Pengally for second in the dying stages of the race.

Reynolds finished second in leg 2 to win overall (1-2, 27 points), with the race winner Pengally second overall just 2 points behind (3-1, 25 points). Williams was third overall on 22 points (2-3).

With the Australian Championships that year being held at Broadford in Victoria, Mike Landman and Trevor Flood were the only locals to place – finishing 1-2 in the National 125cc title.
Swedish expatriate Pelle Grandquist (who was based in New South Wales) dominated the meeting winning both the 500cc and 250cc titles on Husqvarna’s.

West Australian Graeme Smythe won the Unlimited class on a Yamaha, taking out the coveted Duke of Edinburgh award. In the sidecars, South Australians Barry Buckley and Russ Elmi won both the senior and junior classes on Yamaha WASP outfits.
