US Motocross Legend Danny La Porte wins International Supercross events down under

In 1983, American motocross legend Danny La Porte toured Australia and won all International Supercross meetings he contested.

On 29 October 1983, the World 250cc Motocross Champion beat a star-studded line up of International and National riders at Penrith (NSW).  A week later, on 7 November, he cleaned up at Fremantle Oval, on the outskirts of Perth.  Then on 19 November, he won the Melbourne Supercross at the Melbourne Showgrounds.

La Porte was joined at these events by another Yamaha Factory rider and the reigning 500cc World Motocross Champion – the late Hakan Carlqvist from Sweden – and other internationals in a motocross tour down under.

Where Carlqvist dominated all races at the opening motocross event in Broadford (VIC) on 23 October 1983, La Porte excelled in supercross and won the three international supercross events on the tour.

Just a year earlier, La Porte created history becoming the first American to win a World Motocross Championship riding for the Factory Yamaha Team.

He created earlier history when he was selected for the US Team at the 1981 Trophee des Nations for the 250cc class in Lommel, Belgium and Motocross des Nations for 500s in Bielstein, Germany.

Along with Chuck Sun, Johnny O’Mara and Donnie Hanson, on 5-6 September in Belgium, La Porte was part of the first American team to win this prestigious World Motocross Teams event. Then on 12-13 September in Germany, the same US Team won the 500cc event too.

In 2000, La Porte was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame for his individual achievements. Then he was inducted again in 2003, this time as a member of the victorious 1981 Trophee des Nations and Motocross des Nations teams.
