Jett Lawrence wins SuperMotocross 450 World Championship to win 3 titles in 2023

Congratulations to Jett Lawrence from Queensland who, on Saturday, 23 September took out the 2023 SuperMotocross World Championships in the 450 class at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in the United States.

Heading into the final, Lawrence was on 88 points – two points behind fellow Honda rider American Chase Sexton (90) and 8 points ahead of Suzuki rider Ken Roczen (80).

With one race to go, Sexton needed to beat Jett Lawrence for the inaugural SMX crown. Sexton won the holeshot and led the race, with Lawrence in second and only needing to hold this position to clinch the crown. But with nine-minutes to go, Sexton crashed heavily and was out of the race, with Lawrence now needing to hold off Roczen who was hot on his heels in third.

20-year-old Jett Lawrence withstood the pressure to win the race and claimed his first SuperMotocross World Championship, along with the $1 million prize purse. The victory capped off a perfect year for Lawrence who in 2023 won the 250 West AMA Supercross Championship before switching to the CRF450R to win every single moto and win the AMA Pro Motocross 450 Championship in his first year as a rookie.

Lawrence also became the inaugural SuperMotocross World Champion in the new series combing the AMA Supercross and Motocross Championships, followed by two playoff races and a final in September.  It was conceived in 2023 after the AMA Supercross Championship lost its FIM World Championship status.

Brother Hunter crashes out of 250 World title

Unfortunately in the 250 class in the SuperMotocross World Championships Jett’s older brother Hunter had to pull out of the final after injuring his back in a practice crash in LA.

With Hunter leading the 250SMX Championship Standings after two rounds on 89 points, it was a tough decision for the 24-year-old to make. But with the MXdN’s just two weeks away, the Honda team decided that this was the right decision.

Like his brother Jett, Hunter also won two AMA National titles heading into the The SuperMotocross World Championship playoff races and final, but in the 250 class – winning the 250 East AMA Supercross Championship and AMA Pro Motocross 250 Championship.

Heading into the Final round Japanese Kawasaki rider Jo Shimoda (86) was ahead of American Yamaha rider Haiden Deegan (82). The 17-year-old rookie rider would go onto capture the inaugural 250 SuperMotocross World Championship with 5-2 results, enough to finish ahead of 21-year-old Shimoda, with Hunter Lawrence finishing 9th in the overall standings.
