Australian Matt Moss earns his first ever AMA Supercross podium in San Diego

On 11 February 2012, Australian motocross champion Matt Moss lived out a dream, earning his first ever AMA Supercross podium at San Diego in the United States. Riding for the JDR/J-Star/KTM team, Moss finished third in the sixth round of the West Coast Lites Series in San Diego.

The reigning Australian Pro Lites Supercross and Motocross Champion started the night off well, earning third overall in his heat race and a great gate pick for the main event which paid off huge when the gate dropped for the start of the 15-lap final.

Moss launched off the line to a second place start around the first corner. After dropping back two positions into fourth place, he remained close to the lead group and at the half-way mark moved into third when Eli Tomac crashed out of the race.  He quickly moved into third position and rode a steady race for the remainder to secure his and his team’s first AMA Supercross Lites podium.

The result put Moss in sixth overall in the AMA West Coast Supercross Lites series with three rounds remaining. He held that position through to the end of the season – finishing 17th in Seattle, 6th in Salt Lake City and 10th in the final at Las Vegas.

Matt Moss went on to become one of the most successful riders ever to contest Australian Motocross and Supercross Championships. Title after title went his way, nine in total (4 MX and 5 SX), before a shocking accident while racing a MX Nationals event at Shepparton in 2015 saw him side-lined with extensive injuries, followed by a racing suspension, which expired on 15 July 2020.

Returning to the sport after the COVID-19 pandemic, Matt made an incredible comeback to racing (7 years between races) in the 2022 Penrite Australian Pro MX Motocross Championships.

In October 2022, Matt contested the famous Paris (Bercy) Supercross and amazingly was crowned the Prince of Bercy, claiming a triple win on his way to the overall victory in the MX2 class, leaving Jace Owen and team-mate Chris Blose to complete the podium.
