On 6 June 2005, in front of 34,000 British spectators, the late Andrew McFarlane was victorious in the MX2 Grand Prix of Great Britain, and in doing so, also moved to the front of the MX2 World Motocross Championship.

The Queenslander became the first Australian rider to win four Grand Prix events and lead a World Motocross Championship.

The win capped off a purple patch for McFarlane who just weeks earlier won the Italian and European rounds on 5 and 15 May, respectively – winning his first Grand Prix the year before at Gallarate in Italy.

McFarlane finished on 47 points at the Matchams circuit, winning Moto 2 and coming second to British KTM Rider Karl Nunn in Moto 1.

KTM factory rider David Philippaerts was second overall with two third placings. Two weeks earlier, Philippaerts was given the factory 250 SX-F of injured KTM rider Tyla Rattray and has shown a great improvement in his results since.

Third place went to 16-year-old French rider Christophe Pourcel from the Freeman Kawasaki team. Pourcel was second in Moto 2 (10-2) and pushed McFarlane for the lead throughout the race.

Only two other Australian motocross riders have won overall Grand Prix rounds – Jeff Leisk won two in 1989 (500cc in Finland and San Marino) and Chad Reed won one in 2001 (250cc in The Netherlands).

No Australian has ever won a World Motocross Championship with Leisk, Reed and McFarlane each finishing runner-up World Champions in 1989, 2001 and 2005, respectively.
