Renfree - Australia's greatest ever 350cc racer

Based on the top three overall results in each class at the Australian Championships between 1953 and 1974, Western Australian rider Gordon Renfree is Australia’s most successful 350cc racer.

Renfree, who hails from Bunbury in the South West of WA, finished on top on 9 points – just one point ahead of Victorian legends John Burrows and Ken Rumble, who tied for second on 8 points. Renfree won the 1968 Australian 350cc Championship at Collie (WA) on a new lightweight Husqvarna motocross machine, clinching his fourth National title.

Prior to his first win in this class, Renfree finished on the podium three other times in the 350s between 1961 and 1963 – riding a British B.S.A. machine, which dominated the Manufacturer’s Championship winning 12 titles. He was the Runner-up Australian 350cc Champion at Moorebank (1963, NSW), the Rope Works (1962, WA) and Archerfield (1963, QLD).

The other Australian 350cc motocross champions who round out the Top 10 were fellow Western Australians Charlie West and Peter Nicol, who finished equal fourth on 7 points, John Mapperson in sixth place (VIC, 6 pts) and Alan Nicol in seventh (WA, 5pts). A host of riders finished equal in eighth place on 3 points – Bill Watson (WA), Clarrie Stewart (QLD), Graeme Green (WA), Matt Daley (NSW), Ray Turner (TAS) and Roy East (NSW)

National Championships were not held for the 350cc class between 1969 to 1973 due to dwindling numbers. But it was held for a final time at Cosy Creek in Manjimup (WA) in 1974, with numbers strong in that State.

In 2016, Gordon Renfree was inducted into Motorcycle WA’s Hall of Fame. In addition to his four National Motocross Championships, Renfree won five WA State titles.
