Queensland motocross champion, the late Stewart McLachlan was born on 1 March 1960.  The popular Suzuki rider was one of Australia’s leading motocross racers in the late 1970s, early 1980s.

A sensational performance by McLachlan in winning the second round of the prestigious Mr. Motocross (Mr. MX) at Jilliby (NSW) on 29 June 1980, put this young rider firmly in the national motocross spotlight.

McLachlan was already a multiple Queensland Motocross Champion, winning the 1977 State 125cc Championship and 1980 250cc title at Beenleigh.

1980 was his best year when he shot up the Mr. MX leader board into third, after winning the day at Jilliby, just 10 points off the new series leader Darryl Willoughby (Yamaha) on 67 points, who had just edged ahead of Trevor Williams (Kawasaki) on 64, with Stephen Gall tied with McLachlan in third on 57.

Unfortunately, after suffering the effects of a heavy crash at the Winternationals at Tivoli (QLD), McLachlan was unable to contest the next round of the series in Canberra, which was won by Stephen Gall who went on to win his second Mr. MX title.

With his Suzuki bikes prepared by ace tuner Phil Thew, McLachlan was one of the fastest starters in the business.

Sadly, on 28 February 1982 Stewart crashed while leading a motocross race in front of the entire field in Bundaberg (QLD) and was hit from behind and fatally injured during the accident.
