Williams - Australia's greatest ever 500cc racer

Based on the top three overall results in each class at the Australian Championships between 1953 and 2000, Victorian rider Trevor Williams is Australia’s most successful 500cc racer.

Williams from Bairnsdale, 280 kilometers east of Melbourne, raced Kawasaki’s throughout his entire career, finishing on top on 16 points – just two points ahead of fellow Victorian Ray Fisher (14) and four points ahead of Glen Bell (12, NSW).

Williams won three Australian 500cc Motocross Championships and finished on the podium six times in this class alone between 1980 and 1985. He won his first National title at Dargle (NSW) in 1980. That same year he finished second in the prestigious Mr Motocross series, finishing behind Stephen Gall (NSW, Yamaha) and ahead of Darryl Willoughby (SA) in third.

Other Australian 500cc motocross champions who round out the Top 10 were: Craig Dack in fourth place (10, NSW) and Gary Flood in fifth (8, VIC). Seven riders tied in sixth place on 6 points – Charlie West (WA), Pelle Granquist (Sweden), Jeff Leisk (WA), Kim Ashkenazi (NSW), Lee Hogan (VIC), Peter Melton (QLD) and Trevor Flood (VIC).

Williams represented Australia in International competition. He was Australia’s 500cc representative at the Trophy des Nations in 1984 – the last time this event was held separately to the World Motocross des Nations.

He also was also part of the Australian team the following year in Germany with Jeff Leisk and Glen Bell – when all three classes were racing together – placing 7th in the 500cc class.
