Victorians Brian Stewart and Kim Demarte dominated the Australian Sidecarcross scene in the mid-1980s.

During an era when sidecar numbers were at an all-time high and both junior and senior classes were highly competitive, Stewart-Demarte were fast and always a threat to the other teams.

In the Junior Sidecar class, the duo won two Australian Championships – breaking through for their first win in 1985 at Noble Falls in Western Australia, then in 1987 at Smithton in Tasmania, having placed the year before in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Stewart-Demarte won at Noble Falls on a Kawasaki EML outfit, ahead of the new emerging lightweight two stokes ridden by South Australians David Wells-Simon Chapman (Honda JRS) and Darren Williams-Mark Kendle (Honda).

Then at Smithton in 1987, the Korumburra Motor Cycle Club members won on a lightweight 2-stroke Kawasaki. They were the outright winners with a 2-1 result over Cliff Cook-John Steyntjes (WA, Honda VMC, 1-3) and fellow Victorians Darren Robertson-Darryl Elliott (VIC, Kawasaki 3-2).

The first moto was a thriller with the lead changing several times in the closing laps with the Western Australians, who had just returned from Europe on a brand new Honda VMC outfit, putting up a great fight to beat the Victorians.

Stewart-Demarte announced their retirement from the sport at the 1987 Australian Championship presentations – their win in the Junior class taking their National title tally to four – having also won to Unlimited Sidecar titles in 1983 (Acusa Park, SA ) and 1984 (Broadford, VIC).
