Aussie Hunter Lawrence places second overall in the MX2 class at Red Bud

On 6-7 October 2018, Queenslander Hunter Lawrence led Australia to a creditable fourth overall at the Motocross des Nations, held at the Red Bud circuit, in Michigan, United States.

In only his second year competing in the World Team’s event, Lawrence finished second overall in front of more than 80,000 fans on his Honda in the MX2 class, narrowly behind Spain’s Jorge Prado-Garcia.

Lawrence placed second in Moto 2, behind Frenchman Dylan Feranndis (Yamaha), after finishing seventh in Moto 1 with Prado-Garcia scoring two third placings.

Australia’s Open class rider Mitchell Evans (KTM) finished seventh overall in his class with a 10-12 finish, with Kirk Gibbs finishing 12th overall in the MXGP class (12/31).

2010 was the last time the Motocross des Nations was held in the United States, with the Americans favorites to win in home soil.

France went into the event as the defending champions and won their sixth title in 2018 in muddy conditions that really suited the European teams.

Powerhouse France wins five in a row

The Netherlands and Great Britain put up a massive fight, but they couldn’t conquer the reigning MXdN Champion – Team France, who made it five wins in a row.

The French team (Dylan Ferrandis, Gautier Paulin, Jordi Tixier) claimed the victory ahead of The Netherlands (Glenn Coldenhoff Jeffrey Herlings, Calvin Vlaanderen) and Great Britain (Ben Watson, Max Anstie, Tommy Searle) – making it five wins in a row.

Though France won on 32 points, it was only a narrow win over The Netherlands in second (39), who won all three motos.

Australia finished in fourth overall on 48 points, on a countback after tying with the USA.
