Australia finishes on podium at 2022 MXdN’s in the USA

Australia finishes third at 2022 MXoN's behind the hosts USA and France
On 25 September 2022, Team USA’s Eli Tomac, Justin Cooper and Chase Sexton ended the nation’s 11-year wait with a win at the 2022 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations at Red Bud, Michigan.
Where Saturday had perfect weather and track conditions, Sunday featured rainy conditions that seemingly favoured the European teams.
But on home soil and in front of thousands of parochial fans, Team USA got the job done and were thrilled to get their hands on the Chamberlin Trophy for the first time since Team USA last won the World Teams Championship back in 2011 at St. Jean-d’Angely in France.
It’s been a lean period for Team USA, having dominated the MXoN’s in the 1980s and early 1990s, winning 13 in a row between 1981 and 1983, a record that is not likely to be beaten.
In more recent times, the Franch have featured prominently winning the MXoN’s 6 times in the last decade – five in a row between 2014 and 2018, with the win that year at Red Bud.
In 2022, Team France consisted of Maxime Renaux, Marvin Musquin, and Dylan Ferrandis. Team Australia filled the final step on the podium with riders Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, and Mitch Evans.
Team USA finished first with a 16-point scorecard with Eli Tomac winning Moto 1 (1-6), Chase Sexton coming second in Moto 2 (2-3) and Justin Cooper finishing fourth in Moto 2 (9-4).
In second place, Team France ended up with 23 points with Maxime Renaux winning Moto 3 (3-1) with Dylan Ferrandis finishing (6-4) and Marvin Musquin scoring 14-9, just three points ahead of Team Australia on 26 points.

Aussie Jett the most successful individual rider at Red Bud
On his first outing on the works CRF450R Honda, Australian Jett Lawrence topped the Open class timing charts in free practice, winning this class overall.
He was the most successful individual rider over the weekend – finishing 1-2 in Motos 2 and 3 and was awarded the Ricky Carmichael Award for the best up and coming rider at the meeting, a trophy that older brother Hunter won on his debut at Matterley Basin, England in 2017.
At Red Bud in 2022, Hunter scored an 8-10 result, with Mitch Evans finishing a creditable fifth in Moto 1, three places ahead of Hunter. Fortunately, his DNF in Moto 3 did not count, with all teams able to drop their worst result.
At the time, it was Australia’s equal best result finishing on the podium for the second time. Back in 2011, Team Australia also finished third with the team consisting of Chad Reed MX1, Matt Moss MX2 and Brett Metcalfe (Open).
