Western Australia’s Jason Marshall established himself as one of Australia’s premier motocross riders during the late 1980s and early 1990s. An Australian Junior Motocross Champion and two-time Australian Senior Championship runner-up, Marshall was a consistent force at the highest level of the sport and earned selection to represent Australia at the prestigious 1992 Motocross of Nations.

The 1992 event was particularly historic, as it was staged at Cosy Creek, Manjimup—the first and only time the Motocross of Nations has been held outside the Northern Hemisphere. Marshall secured his place in the Australian team after a commanding victory at the Manjimup 15000 aboard a Kawasaki 250, which also doubled as the opening round of the inaugural Australian National Motocross Championships for 125cc and 250cc machines.

Lining up alongside fellow Western Australian Dale Britton (250cc) and New South Welshman Kim Ashkenazi (125cc), Marshall helped Australia finish a highly respectable sixth overall against the world’s best riders riding a Kawasaki 500. It capped a memorable season in which he also finished runner-up in the Australian 250cc Motocross Championship.

When Manjimup hosted the final round of the 1993 FIM World 125cc Motocross Championship, Marshall – nicknamed “The Goose” – expanded his racing program by contesting the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc classes in preparation for the international event. The extra workload proved worthwhile, with Marshall finishing runner-up in the Australian 125cc Championship behind Ashkenazi, who had swept all three national classes the previous year.

Marshall returned to the top step of the podium at Manjimup in 1994, claiming his second Manjimup 15000 international title just one year after the town had hosted two world-class motocross events.

His achievements extended well beyond the national stage. Marshall won eight Western Australian Motocross Championships—including the Restricted Licence Holders title—and claimed victory in many of the state’s premier events, including the Western Classic, Harley Scramble and BSA Cup.

While based in the eastern states, he also finished runner-up in the 1989 New South Wales 250cc Championship, placed sixth in the 1990 Mister Motocross Series and was third in the 1993 Queensland 250cc Championship.
