AMX History honours Australian Motorsport Legend Blair Shepherd, the visionary promoter who revolutionized Australian Supercross, following his passing in Brisbane on 2 April 2025, at age 91.

A titan of speedway, BMX, and supercross, Shepherd’s influence reshaped motorsport entertainment in Australia.
Born in Brisbane, the Australian Speedway Hall of Famer, who won the 1969 Australian Speedcar Championship, transitioned from racing to promotion, channelling his showmanship into groundbreaking speedway and supercross events.

His 1979 Stefan’s Superbowl of Motocross at Archerfield Speedway — Australia’s first major supercross—defied a torrential storm to draw massive crowds, featuring international stars Americans – Rex Staten and the late Marty Smith – up against Australian legends Stephen Gall, Anthony Gunter, Trevor Willams and other top national riders.

In 1980, Shepherd elevated the sport with back-to-back sold-out supercross events at Sydney Showgrounds, pitting Australian riders against a U.S. team headlined by Staten and Smith.

The spectacle included stunt rider Doug Domokos’ legendary wheelies, cementing supercross as a must-see phenomenon. These events set the blueprint for future promotions across the country, blending racing with theatrical flair, with supercross taking the country by storm in the 1980s.

Shepherd’s entrepreneurial spirit extended to BMX, where he founded BMX International (1978) and staged Australia’s first international BMX race in 1980. His Windsor BMX track became a hub for the sport’s early growth.
