Webster takes overall win at Mackay and series lead in the MX1 Championship

Team HRC Honda Racing rider Kyle Webster moved into the overall lead in the Thor MX1 class in the Penrite Australian ProMX Motocross Championships after winning Round 2 at Mackay, Queensland on 10 April.

Webster, from Victoria, was the clear outright winner with a 1-2 finish (47 points) over Australian Champions Dean Ferris (Honda, 41) and Todd Waters (Husqvarna, 38).

It was a close battle for the last place on the rostrum at the Gum Valley circuit with Yamaha rider Aaron Tanti continuing his good form to finish in fourth (37), just two points ahead of 2015 MX1 Australian Champion Kirk Gibbs (KTM, 35).

After a dream start to the 2022 season, where he scored maximum points in the opening round at Wonthaggi on 27 March, reigning Australian MX1 Champion Luke Clout’s chances of retaining his crown took a dent with a DNF in both motos.  The CDR Yamaha Monster Energy and THOR MX1 Red Plate Holder lead Moto 1 early, but crashed heavily and was taken to the local Mackay Hospital for evaluation.

Moto 1 was filled with drama, with Factory Honda Racing Australia’s Dean Ferris winning the holeshot and leading until the end of lap 1, when he too crashed. But he was uninjured and rejoined the race.  After Clout’s misfortune, CDR Yamaha Monster Energy rider Aaron Tanti inherited the lead from his team mate and Clout’s misfortune. Tanti led for two-thirds of the 25 minute, plus 1 lap race with Kyle Webster (Honda) passing him to take the lead with 9 minutes to go.

Webster – the reigning MX2 Champion – held onto win his first moto of the season in the premier MX1 class ahead of Tanti. Three experienced veterans of the sport battled it out for third with Todd Waters finishing ahead of GO24 KTM’s Brett Metcalfe and Dean Ferris who, recovered from his earlier fall, to claim fifth position.

Three-time Australian MX1 Champion Dean Ferris won the holeshot in moto 2, but this time he was determined to stay upright throughout – which he did.
Ferris opened up a commanding lead over Aaron Tanti, Kirk Gibbs, Brett Metcalfe and Kyle Webster in that order. Webster eventually passed Metcalfe for fourth placing, then moved into third after Gibbs made a mistake.

Ferris, who has just got back into racing after retiring from the sport, won moto 2 ahead of team mate Webster in second. Kirk Gibbs moved past Tanti in the dying stages of the race to finish third ahead of Todd Waters and Brett Metcalfe.

Webster’s 1-2 finish gave him the overall Round 2 victory, ahead of Ferris and Tanti. With series leader Clout finishing out of the points, Webster is the new overall leader on 85 points, ahead of Tanti (79) and Waters (76).  Ferris’ great performance at Mackay sees him rocket into the Top 10 and is now in sixth overall (57) behind Gibbs and Metcalfe.

Todd maintains perfect record in MX2 class

In the Pirelli MX2 class, Queenslander Wilson Todd continued his unbeaten streak to four moto wins in a row. After scoring maximum points in the opening round at Wonthaggi, the Team HRC Honda Factory Racing rider and dual Australian MX2 champion (2019 and 2020) repeated this feat – winning both motos at Mackay.

Red Plate holder Todd picked up where he left off at Wonthaggi and won the holeshot in Moto 1, clearing away from the field in the opening laps and going on to win comfortably.

Yamalube Yamaha’s Rhys Budd put pressure on Todd early in the race, but gradually dropped back of the pace and was eventually overtaken by team mate Alex Larwood, who held onto finish second. The battle for third intensified as the race neared the end with Budd holding to beat home Dylan Wills and Noah Ferguson in 4th and 5th positions, respectively.

Todd did not win the holeshot in moto 2, but he assumed the lead early after Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson fell after winning the start and leading early.
Todd went on to win the race and maintain his perfect streak in the Pirelli MX2 class, ahead of Serco Yamaha team mates Bailey Malkiewicz and Jesse Dobson.

As it turned out, the overall results were identical to round 1 at Wonthaggi with Todd the overall winner at Mackay, ahead of Larwood and Malkiewicz. After two rounds, Todd (100) now leads Larwood by 16 points (84) and 27 ahead of Malkiewicz (73).

Minear wins MX3 class to close in on series leader

Western Australian KTM rider Kayden Minear was the overall Round 2 winner at Mackay in the MAXXIS MX3 development class for 14-18 year-old aspiring champions.

Minear finished 2-1 in both motos to move up into second place in the overall standings within six points of Honda Australia Red Ride rider, Cambell Williams (4-3).  Williams, who was unbeaten in Round 1 at Wonthaggi finished third at Mackay after a 4-3 finish, just one point behind KTM’s Ryan Alexanderon.

Alexander won the holeshot in Moto 1 and lead the race from start to finish. Minear eventually won the battle with Connor Towill and Maxxis MX3 red plate holder Campbell Williams on his Honda Racing Australia CRF250r for second place, with Jack Mather who claiming third.
