Amazingly, Reed, the 2009 AMA Supercross runner-up champion made a last-minute decision to compete in the Motocross Nationals for the first time since 2006. A multi-AMA and World Supercross Champion, Reed proved that he was equally capable in stadiums and outdoor motocross events.

In moto one Reed grabbed the early lead and held it to the end. But it wasn’t without some pressure from Jake Moss, who was also being pressured by local ace Robby Marshall right up until the final lap of the 30-minute plus 2 lap moto when the American went down, much to the disappointment of the local fans.
With Marshall going down, but recovering to finish fifth, Byrne was elevated to third.

In moto two American Andrew Short (Honda Red Bull Racing) had the early lead before being passed by Reed, but that did not last too long. But the newly crowned National Champion cross-rutted on the face of the finish line jump and crashed hard, suffering his first DNF of the season.

That handed the lead to Yamaha Factory Racing substitute rider Matt Goerke, who went on to take the moto and overall win with a 6-1 total. Michael Byrne was third again and tied on points for the overall lead, but lost on a countback with Goerke getting the nod thanks to his second moto win.

Unfortunately for Jake Moss, after finishing second in moto one, he was running well in moto two, but ran out of free play in his clutch, and it overheated, causing him to DNF as well.

In moto two the three Aussies were unable to repeat their earlier history-making performance, but they all did us proud with Byrne equal first on points (3-3), Reed in eighth (1-31) and Moss in ninth (2-30).
